Science Tuition

Science Tuition

This is what one of our clients said about one of our Science tutors:

''My daughter was struggling with chemistry since she started her A Level. I acquired the services of two different tutors from another tutoring provider and on both occasions, my daughter didn't like their approach and hence didn't enjoy the tuition. I then approached Achievers Tutoring who allocated a new chemistry tutor to my daughter. When they had their first lesson, I could see straight away that a 'light bulb moment 'had occurred. My daughter was able to connect with Matthew (the tutor) from day one. Since then, my daughter's confidence and performance in chemistry has jumped through the roof. This tutor understands how to motivate students to get the best out of them. I would highly recommend Matthew and Achievers Tutoring to any parents who want their children to achieve their full potential.''

Our Approach

The first thing that our tutors find useful before the very first lesson is to ask if the student struggles with specific topics or if they just want to improve their knowledge and confidence in the subject more generally. Sometimes it could be specific areas that the student finds particularly hard, like for example questions that require the use of maths, or it could be that they are unsure of some basic concepts, which in turn are causing the misunderstanding in other areas.

For the lessons themselves, our tutors create practice questions and go over these with the student. These would normally include questions on topics the student said they struggled with. Alternatively, if they want to improve in a more general manner or are unsure where they struggle, then the tutors create questions from a mixture of topics and mixture of question types ; for some questions maths skills are required, some require longer written answers and some check basic understanding- such as filling the blanks in a table or a diagram,, or answering simple true or false questions.

In lessons, we go through the questions together, one by one. Our tutors find that this creates a better engagement. It allows the tutor and the student to discuss the question and identify their knowledge of the topic in the question. If they are unsure, the tutor will give them hints and steer them towards the answer to see if they can reach it on their own. If that doesn't work, then tutors will intervene to explain the answer to them and note it down as something to be reassessed again in future lessons. Repetition can often help to get information to stick with the student.
